Welcome to the Monterey Conferences

from John Ramirez, Director of Environmental Health, Monterey County.

We cordially invite you to attend the 2011 Symposium on Food Systems & Public Health to be held in May this year in the picturesque City of Monterey, in Monterey County.  We hope you will enjoy the program prepared for you, as well as the many sites and activities this part of our coast has to offer.

Casually called the “S3 Symposium” (after our motto Safe●Secure●Sustainable), the first and very successful S3 Symposium held in San Diego in November 2009 brought a wide range of food, public health and environmental interests together for two days of highly informative interdisciplinary presentations and panel discussions.  In Monterey, the S3 Symposium will continue to build on this success by uniting experts from federal, state, and local regulatory agencies with industry environmental health professionals, food producers, academia and other individuals and organizations that seek to promote the understanding of the interdependency of agricultural production, sea food harvest, food safety, social equity and environmental sustainability.

This year’s theme for the S3 Symposium is Harvesting the Land and the Sea. We will compare the food production systems and health impacts of the Sea Food and Agricultural industries – from the bountiful fisheries in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the Southern Gulf Coast, to the fertile fields of Monterey County’s historic Salinas Valley made famous by our celebrated local author, John Steinbeck.

We welcome you to join us in Monterey as we partner together to develop strategies to create safe, secure and sustainable food systems.

See What Monterey Has to Offer!

Visit the amazing Monterey Bay Aquarium, as well as Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, made famous by Nobel Prize-winning Salinas writer John Steinbeck. Experience the legendary golf courses of Pebble Beach. Take a California wine country vacation in Carmel Valley, Soledad or Salinas Valley, or go art gallery hopping in beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea or buzzing Sand City. For an outdoor experience, hike the wild trails of Big Sur, go surfing in Moss Landing, or watch the hang gliders in Marina and Seaside. Dine in centrally located Del Rey Oaks, and relax in an old-fashioned, seaside home town among the Victorian cottages and Monarch butterflies of Pacific Grove.
